HAYWARD, Calif. – No. 20-ranked Cal Poly Pomona had to dig deep on the road but grabbed a 3-1 victory (26-24, 27-29, 25-19, 25-19) over Cal State East Bay to remain undefeated in CCAA action.
The Broncos improve to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in conference, while the Pioneers slip to 4-5 on the year and 0-2 in CCAA play.
Madison Novak led the Broncos with 23 kills, while
Samantha Campion followed with 18 kills and
Sarah Ybarra added 15.
Caitie Mueller continued to fuel the offense and finished with 49 assists, while also posting a career-high 26 digs.
Avery Percival added 18 digs and Campion chipped in another 15.
CPP had to dig deep in the first set after finding itself trailing 12-6. The Broncos slowly chipped away at the margin before back-to-back points from Ybarra – a kill and a combo block with Campion – put the visitors in front.
Cal State East Bay tried to take back control and reached set point first, but three-straight points for the Broncos – including consecutive kills from Novak – gave CPP the first victory.
The second set was a battle with the Pioneers ultimately grabbing the upper hand with a 29-27 win to even the match at one set apiece.
CPP buckled down in the third and fourth sets, however, to secure the match win.
The Broncos return home to Kellogg Arena for a ranked showdown on Friday, hosting No. 21-ranked Cal State L.A. at 5 p.m.
