Duke Hits 1,000 Career Kill Mark in Sweep Over No. 23 CSULA

POMONA – Two of the top teams not only in the CCAA, but all of NCAA Division II went head-to-head Friday night, with No. 18-ranked Cal Poly Pomona grabbing a three-set sweep (25-20, 25-21, 25-13) over No. 23-ranked Cal State L.A. in Kellogg Arena.

The Broncos extend their winning streak to seven-straight matches and improve to 10-1 on the year, 3-0 in conference action with the win. The Golden Eagles drop to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in CCAA action with their first conference loss.

Samantha Campion led all attackers with 18 kills on an impressive .500 attack percentage. Madison Novak and Daisy Duke each added seven kills, with Duke hitting her 1,000th career kill to move into ninth all-time in school history.

"This is such an honor for Daisy to have her 1000th kill tonight," said Bronco Head Coach Traci Dahl. "She has been a force on this team for four years and continues to raise her level of play, dominating both at the conference and national level."

Defensively, Avery Percival led the Broncos with 11 digs, while Emily Payne finished with eight.

The Broncos came out fired up and opened hitting at a .500 clip in the first set. Alexia Athans and Campion got the match started on a high note after combining for a block to spark a 4-0 opening run.

CSULA tried to chip away at the upper hand, but the Broncos kept the Eagles at bay and pushed out to a seven-point lead, 17-10, off back-to-back kills from Campion. The Broncos kept rolling and Duke put the final dagger down to secure the first set victory.

Both teams battled back-and-forth in the second set until Novak initiated a four-point run to put the Broncos in front 19-15. The Eagles tried to hang with the home team, but CPP reached set point first and Campion smacked down a kill to give the Broncos a commanding two-set lead.

CPP came out in the third determined to put it away early and opened on a 9-1 run. The Broncos had three blocks and an ace during the run before the Eagles could catch their breath.

Cal State L.A. put a run of its own together to cut the margin to three points, 12-9, but the Broncos took back control and jumped out to a 10-point lead, 21-11, off Eagle mishaps. Kaitlan Tucker and Duke teamed up for a big stuff before another CSULA error and a Campion kill sealed the set and match victory for the Broncos.

Cal Poly Pomona looks to keep rolling as it turns right around to host Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon. First serve is set for 3 p.m. in Kellogg Arena.
