No. 18 Broncos Hold Onto Unblemished CCAA Record

POMONA – No. 18-ranked Cal Poly Pomona kept rolling and grabbed a three-set sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday to sit in the top spot of the CCAA standings.

With their eighth-straight win, the Broncos improved to 11-1 on the year and keep their unblemished CCAA record intact at 4-0 – the only unbeaten team in the conference. The Toros drop to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in conference.

Samantha Campion led the Broncos with 15 kills in the match, while Madison Novak added 12 kills. Caitie Mueller dished out 31 assists, posted 13 digs and had three aces at the line.

CPP came out strong off the block, finishing with 10 blocks – compared to the Toros' three – with Alexia Athans leading the charge with five blocks. Kaitlan Tucker followed with four blocks and Mueller chipped in another three.

After some back-and-forth action to start the first set, CPP scored four consecutive points to take control of the game. Novak got the spurt going with a kill off a Muller assist, before Mueller's serve was too hard to handle for an ace to cap the run.

The Toros tried to keep with the Broncos, but a kill from Daisy Duke handed CPP the 25-20 victory to put the home team in front early in the match.

Similar to the first set, the second set had more seesaw action before CPP found itself trailing 17-13. Novak powered down a kill to start a rally for the Broncos, who saw two aces from Mueller and a combo block from Athans and Novak to tie the set, 17-17. CPP carried that through to take the set 25-22 and jump in front 2-0 in the match.

The Broncos came out determined to put the match away and opened with a 6-0 run to start the third and kept rolling, pushing the lead to 11 points, 23-12. The Toros got the next point, but back-to-back kills from Tucker and Mueller secured the 25-13 victory for the Broncos.

CPP looks to carry momentum into next week as it remains at home to host Stanislaus State on Friday with first serve set for 3 p.m.
