No. 24 CPP Hands NNU First Defeat

POMONA – After suffering its first loss of the season, No. 24-ranked Cal Poly Pomona looked to bounce back at home at the Broncos Fall Classic. The Broncos battled but handed Northwest Nazarene University its first defeat of the year with a 3-1 victory (25-23, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22) Thursday night in Kellogg Arena.

The Broncos improve to 4-1 on the year, while the Nighthawks drop to 4-1 overall.

Three Broncos finished the night with double-digit kills as Samantha Campion, Madison Novak and Daisy Duke each posted 13 kills in the match. Caitie Mueller dished out 40 assists, while adding 13 digs defensively. Avery Percival led the Broncos with 19 digs, while Campion chipped in 15 digs and Duke contributed 13.

Both teams battled in the opening set with CPP holding a slight hitting edge over the NNU (.219 to .116). It came down to the wire, but a combo block from Alexia Athans (three blocks) and Duke (four blocks) won the set for the Broncos, 25-23.

It was back-and-forth to start the second set, but CPP soon found its rhythm and took off on an 11-1 run to take control of the game. Down 10-8, the Broncos got the ball back off a service error and Novak laid down a kill to help fuel a 4-0 spurt.

The Nighthawks called timeout and scored on the next play, but CPP scored seven-straight points to all but seal the set win. Novak put the final dagger in off a Giselle Vogel assist to give CPP (who hit at a .400 clip in the set) the 25-15 victory.

NNU kept the match going with a 25-19 win in the third, but CPP battled back to win the fourth 25-22 and take the match.

CPP continues the Classic with two matches on Friday, hosting Point Loma at 12:30 p.m. and capping the night with a match against Simon Fraser at 6 p.m.
