Broncos Back in Win Column With Convincing Victory Over Seawolves

POMONA, Calif. – The Broncos ended a six-game losing skid on Thursday night, defeating the Sonoma State Seawolves 58-48 in Kellogg Arena. With the win, the Broncos improve to 3-9 on the season and 2-6 in conference play, while also improving to 2-2 at home. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 8-6 on the season and tied for fourth in the CCAA with a 4-4 conference record.
 
Brandon Porter came up big for the Broncos in their first home game of 2024, recording his first double-double of the season with game-highs 20 points and 10 rebounds. This was Porter's eighth time scoring in double figures this season, including doing so in all three games since the start of the new year. The Virginia Beach native also made a season-high four treys, shooting an impressive .500 beyond the arc and .636 from the floor.
 
Chris Gayles Jr. also found success finding the basket, shooting .625 from the field and 3-for-5 (.600) from deep. Gayles' 13 points was a season high, bringing his average to 6.0 points per game this season.
 
CPP went on a tear to open the game, making three treys in the opening six minutes to gain a startling 17-3 lead. The team would maintain a comfortable double-digit lead through the rest of the first half, reaching as high as 19 points when Gayles Jr. hit a buzzer-beating three in the final second. All three of Gayles Jr.'s treys came in the first half, marking a season-high.
 
At half, the score sat 32-13 in favor of the Broncos. During Greg Kamansky's 23 seasons as head coach, the Broncos were 345-52 (.869) when leading at halftime entering Thursday.
 
The Broncos offense slowed down in the latter half, being outscored by Sonoma State 26-35 in the final 20 minutes. However, the Broncos' comfortable buffer established in the first half allowed the team to maintain a 58-48 lead at the final buzzer.
 
As a whole, the Broncos shot better than the Seawolves in every facet, going 40 percent from the field, 32 percent beyond the arc, and 65 percent from the charity stripe. The team's seven three-pointers also marked a season high.
