Porter Scores 28 in Narrow Defeat to Cougars

POMONA, Calif.Brandon Porter had a career game on Saturday afternoon, scoring a career-high 28 points while shooting 11-for-17 (.647) from the field and 3-for-8 (.375) from beyond the arc. The Virginia Beach native caps off an impressive week, scoring 48 total points with 14 rebounds while shooting a combined 18-for-28 (.642) from the floor and 7-for-16 (.438) from three point range.

The Broncos went toe-to-toe against the Cougars, who entered the game with a 6-8 record on the season. CSUSM gained the lead in the first five minutes, and never trailed from that point forward. Despite the Broncos trailing for a majority of the game, they never trailed by more than 12 points and nearly the entire second half was just a single-digit deficit. Both teams shot exactly 33 percent from the field in the opening half, while the Cougars also shot 33 percent from three point range. The Broncos, on the other hand, struggled to shoot from deep, as they were just 1-for-13 (.077) from three-point range. This scoring disparity allowed CSUSM to finish the first half ahead by seven at 29-22.

Cal Poly Pomona turned it into high gear in the second half, scoring 38 points - their fourth-most in a half this season. However, Cal State San Marcos did not let up either, also scoring exactly 38 points. The Broncos made things interesting, tying the game at 39-39 with 14:04 to go on a Chris Gayle Jr. fastbreak trey. Gayles Jr. would finish with the second-most points in the game for CPP with eight, while also leading the team with eight boards, five assists, and three steals. Over the final 10 minutes, the Cougars would match every basket the Broncos made, thwarting comeback efforts and handing the Broncos their 10th loss of the season.

With the loss, the Broncos fall to 3-10 overall and are tied for 5th place in the conference standings with a 2-7 CCAA record. The Cougars move to second place in the conference with a 6-3 CCAA record.

Michael Ofoegbu also scored eight points in the game, recording four rebounds. Bam Johnson and Kodey Weary were close behind, each contributing six points. The Broncos shot 48 percent from the field on Saturday, their third-highest shooting percentage in a game this season.
