LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Broncos came up short against the Golden Eagles on Thursday night, losing by a score of 55-79 to fall to 2-8 on the season. With a 1-5 CCAA record, CPP currently sits tied for sixth place in the conference standings, while Cal State LA remains tied for second place at 5-1.

Caleb Nelson recorded the first double-double of his career on Thursday night, scoring 11 points with 10 rebounds. It was the Carlsbad native's 59
th career game in a Bronco uniform, and his ninth start of the 2023-24 season. Nelson currently ranks third on the team in minutes played per game at 19.8 and second in three point field goals made with eight this season.
The Broncos knew it would be a tough matchup going into the game, as the Golden Eagles rank first in the CCAA in points per game at 79.2, compared to the Broncos' 60.7. The game would prove to have a similar result, as CSULA led the Broncos 37-26 by halftime.
CPP held their ground at the start of the second half, whittling the Golden Eagles' lead down to just seven points on free throws by
Jaden Winfield with 14:17 to go. LA would quickly respond, gaining and maintaining a double-digit lead for the next nine minutes of play. With the score at 61-51 with 5:41 left on the clock, the Golden Eagles delivered the dagger – a 13-point unanswered run coming from multiple baskets by Okeke and Escobar to take a 23-point lead. The game would come to a close with a final score of 55-79, the Broncos' second largest margin of defeat this season. Despite the score, the Broncos were very much in the game until the final few minutes.
The Broncos have been steadily improving in rebounding, as their season-high 41 boards against CSUSB on Sunday and 38 against LA on Thursday are their most in back-to-back games this season.
