Broncos Drop Nailbiter in Final Seconds

CARSON, Calif. – In their closest game of the season, the Broncos dropped a heartbreaker to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon, losing by a score of 62-64. This was CPP's sixth loss in a row, falling to 2-9 on the season and 1-6 in CCAA play. With the win, the Toros improve to 10-3 on the season and are now tied for third in the CCAA standings.

The Broncos looked strong out of the gate, getting on the board in the first minute with a Chris Gayles Jr. trey for the first score of the game. The Toros, who were nationally ranked in last week's NABC Top 25, kept the game close throughout the entire first half – neither team gaining a lead of more than five points. CPP outshot CSUDH from the field and at the charity stripe during the opening 20 minutes, something they haven't done since their 70-53 win over Cal Poly Humboldt back in November. The Broncos would close out the first half with a 29-27 lead, their first time leading at the break since facing the Lumberjacks.

The intensity continued into the second half, as neither team gained a lead of more than six points for the remainder of the game. In total, there were 15 lead changes in the game with seven tie scores. With three minutes remaining, Caleb Nelson made two free throws to give the Broncos their biggest lead of the game at 62-56. After a layup and four perfect free throws, the Toros would promptly tie the game up at 62-62 with 1:19 to go. Neither team would find the basket over the next minute, allowing CSUDH to inbound the ball with 0:19 left on the clock. With just six seconds left in the game, Andre Ball delivered a crucial dunk to seal a 64-62 comeback victory for the Toros.

Both Brandon Porter and Jaden Winfield scored in double figures with 12 a piece, while eight other Broncos scored at least three points. Nelson followed up his double-double on Thursday with a career-high 12 rebounds and four blocks on Saturday, the most of any player in the game in both categories. The team continued doing well down low, recording a season-high 44 rebounds.
