Salazar's Second-Half Goal Sends Broncos to the NCAA Third Round

POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Western Washington University in the second round of the NCAA West Regional. The win propels the Broncos into the third round of the tournament, where they will face the Point Loma Sea Lions on Saturday, November 30th, at 1:00 PM PST in what promises to be a thrilling regional final.

The game against Western Washington was a tense, defensive battle from the start. The first half ended in a 0-0 deadlock, with both teams creating a few chances but struggling to break down the opposing defenses. The Broncos, who were ranked 1st in the NCAA West Region heading into the tournament, came out with renewed energy after the break.

At the 48:58 mark, Marisa Salazar scored the game-winning goal for the Broncos, taking advantage of a well-timed assist from Tara Oper. The goal gave Cal Poly Pomona the lead, and they would hold on to it for the remainder of the match.

The Broncos' defense was key to their victory. Goalkeeper Bella Hara played an essential role, registering three crucial saves, each one ensuring the Broncos' slim lead was protected. Bella Anderson, Giselle Samayoa, Lindsay Sung, and Liberty Ortiz all played the full 90 minutes and put in solid performances, making key clearances and breaking up Western Washington's attacks.

Offensively, Marisa Salazar was the standout, registering two shots on goal, while Tara Oper added another shot on target. The Broncos' efficient attack, combined with their resolute defense, was enough to see them through to the next round.
