Broncos Strand Tying Run in the Ninth, Split Series

POMONA, Calif. – The Broncos' comeback efforts in the ninth inning fell just short, resulting in their 11th loss of the season. Cal Poly Pomona currently sits sixth in the CCAA standings with a 5-7 conference record, while holding a 9-11 record overall.

Evan Adolphus took the mound for the Broncos in the series finale, his first of the season. The junior out of Fullerton struck out a season-high seven batters across 5.2 innings, while also allowing nine hits and three earned runs on 91 pitches. His seven strikeouts nearly doubled his season total, having entered the game with eight.

Dylan Esquival and Andrew Campbell each made appearances out of the pen. Campbell threw two scoreless innings, not allowing a single base runner on 23 pitches.

The offense faced similar struggles to the series opener, not being able to string together hits for the first six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, the Green & Gold finally broke through with three runs on four hits. Just as he had done on Saturday, AJ Nimeh provided the big swing, singling up the middle to score both Johnny Pappas and Brent Cota to make the score 5-2. Two batters later, Marco Malerba also singled up the middle to score Nimeh, narrowing the deficit to 5-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, still down by two runs, Nimeh once again delivered a timely hit with a slicing double down the left field line, advancing Cota to third. Anthony Gibbons would then push across Cota with an RBI groundout to third base, bringing the score to 5-4. With the tying run just 180 feet away and two outs in the ninth, Malerba swung and missed on a 2-2 count, striking out to end the game. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 9-11 on the season and split the series with the Pioneers.
