Gibbons Red Hot at the Plate, Broncos Clinch Series

ROHNERT PARK, Calif.Anthony Gibbons stole the show in the doubleheader on Saturday, going 6-for-8 with a home run in both games while driving in six batters and scoring six runs. On the weekend, Gibbons now owns an absurd stat line of 9-for-12 (.750) with eight runs scored, hitting a home run in each of the three games and driving in nine runners. The Salt Lake City native has a total of six extra base hits, having also collected a double in each contest. Going back to the series against East Bay, Gibbons now has four home runs in his past five games.

Game 1: CPP 10, SSU 2
Rhys Stevens delivered a quality start on the mound for the Broncos, going 6.0 innings and only allowing one earned run to pick up his first win of the season. The redshirt junior has been consistent over the past month, going at least 6.0 innings in each of his past four starts. He also ranks third on the team with 21 strikeouts.

Cal Poly Pomona got out to an early lead in the second inning, scoring three runs on five hits. Two of those runs came on stolen bases, where the runner was able to advance home on the throw. They would add on one more in the third inning, coming on a bases loaded hit by pitch with Tyler Chaffee at the plate, giving him an RBI on the play.

The middle innings would prove to be quiet for the offense, as CPP only collected one hit in the middle three frames. Gibbons then broke that silence in the top of the seventh with a solo shot, making the score 5-1. Johnny Pappas added on in the eighth, doubling down the left field line to score Brent Cota and give the Broncos a 6-1 advantage.

The Broncos would blow it open in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 10-2 lead. All five hits came in the first five batters of the inning, including Marco Malerba, AJ Nimeh, Gibbons, Chaffee, and Nick Lugo. Another bases loaded hit by pitch to Jack Sanders would bring in the final run of the game. In total, the Broncos collected 15 hits, their second most of the season up until this point.

Ruben Del Castillo and Andrew Campbell shut down the Seawolves in the final three innings, allowing just three hits and one run to secure the 11th victory of the season.

Game 2: CPP 15, SSU 7 (7 innings)
As if 36 hits in the first two games of the series weren't enough, the Bronco bats added 17 more in the second game of the doubleheader. For the third straight game, Gibbons led the team going 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, elevating his season batting average to .318 and season OPS to over 1.000.

Pappas and Beau Betten also recorded three hits in the contest, with it being Betten's first multi-hit game as a Bronco. Eight of the nine batters in the starting lineup collected at least one hit, while four players collected an extra base hit.

Holding a 5-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded, Gibbons once again stepped up, this time belting a grand slam to left center field to give CPP crucial separation late in the game. A Pappas walk and a Sanders two-run single to right center field would then extend the lead to 12-3, putting the game out of reach for the Seawolves and all but securing the series victory. CPP added on their final three runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning, coming on an additional four hits including a leadoff double from Nimeh – his sixth of the season.

Noel Soto earned his third win of the season in game two, going five innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out two. Chris Fields and AJ Moreno each threw an inning out of the pen, allowing four earned runs on four hits.

The win was their 12th of the season, moving their win percentage back above .500 for the first time since March 1st.
