Broncos Finish With 45 Runs Scored Against Seawolves

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Broncos made things interesting in the ninth inning on Sunday, but were unable to make a comeback – resulting in a 3-5 loss to Sonoma State in the series finale. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 12-12 on the season and 8-8 in conference play. Having won the first three games of the series by a wide margin, the Broncos finish the four-game set with 45 runs scored – their fourth-most in a series since 2004.

Not surprisingly, Johnny Pappas and Anthony Gibbons recorded multiple hits on Sunday – each doing so for the fourth time in as many games on the weekend. The two combined for an unbelievable series, together going 22-for-32 (.688) with 15 runs scored, 14 RBI, 11 walks, five home runs, four doubles, and just two strikeouts. Each scored once in the series finale, while also each stealing one base.

Jack Sanders got the Broncos on the board in the third inning with his fifth home run of the season, scoring Pappas to give CPP an early 2-0 lead. Nick Lugo would add on in the top of the fifth inning with a single through the left side, scoring Gibbons to put the Green & Gold up by three. This would be the last time the Broncos scored in the game.

Sonoma State would respond with a five-run sixth inning, flipping the script to take a 5-3 lead. In the top of the ninth, the Broncos were able to get the tying run on first base via a Sanders walk and a Gibbons single, however a flyout to right field by Tyler Chaffee - who had five hits on the weekend - would end the game.

Evan Adolphus delivered five strong innings in his second start of the season, not allowing a run on six hits. In the sixth inning, Adolphus ran into some heavy traffic on the bases by surrendering three walks and two hits, allowing two runs to score. Edrian Rangel would enter out of the pen, allowing three more of Adolphus' runs to cross before getting the final out of the inning.

Rangel and Dylan Esquival each threw 1.1 innings on Sunday, neither allowing a hit or an earned run and each striking out two. With the loss, the Broncos are now tied for fourth in the CCAA with an 8-8 conference record.
