Baseball Headed to NCAA Tournament for 16th Time in Program History

5/12/2024 9:00:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – For the 16th time in program history, and the eighth time in the past nine seasons (excluding 2020 and 2021), the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team will compete in the NCAA Tournament. With a 31-22 overall record, the Broncos secured the No. 4 seed in the west region, sending them to San Diego for the second time in three seasons.

The six teams will be split into two regionals, hosted by both No. 1 seed Point Loma and No. 2 seed Cal State Monterey Bay. The San Diego regional will consist of PLNU, CPP, as well as No. 5 seed Cal State San Marcos, while the Seaside regional will consist of Cal State Monterey Bay, Northwest Nazarene, and San Francisco State. The winner of each regional will face off in the super regionals the following weekend, May 24-25th. Whichever team wins that best-of-three series will advance to Cary, NC for the DII College World Series.

Head coach Randy Betten makes his ninth appearance with CPP in the national tournament, in just his 13th season with the program (12 if you exclude the shortened 2020 season). Betten led the Green & Gold to back-to-back College World Series appearances in 2015 and 2016, finishing in the national semifinals both times. This year, the Broncos look to make their first appearance in Cary since 2016.

Cal Poly Pomona baseball is one of the more storied programs in NCAA Division II history, ranking third with three national titles – 1976, 1980, and 1983. All three title runs were led by legendary head coach John Scolinos, and two of which ('76 and '83) included current assistant coach Jimmy Ramos on the coaching staff. The Broncos look to bring the title back to the west, as a west region school has not held up the trophy since 2001, when St. Mary's (TX) won it all. A CCAA school has not won the national title since Chico State did so in 1999.

Game Preview
The Broncos will take on Cal State San Marcos in the opening game of the regional this Thursday, May 16th, at 11:00 AM. Should they win that game, they will advance to the 12:00 PM game on Friday. If they lose the opening game of the tournament, they will immediately have to play in an elimination game against Point Loma at 2:00 PM on Thursday.

Cal Poly Pomona just faced Cal State San Marcos this past week in the CCAA Tournament, defeating the Cougars 10-3 thanks to a strong pitching performance from senior Noel Soto. The Broncos are 23-6 (.793) all-time against CSUSM, dating back to the 2016 season when the Cougars joined the CCAA. Thursday's game will be San Marcos' first DII tournament appearance in program history.
