Men’s Soccer Ranked No. 2 in CCAA Preseason Poll

8/22/2024 2:00:00 PM

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team was ranked number two in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) preseason poll, it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. The Broncos were also ranked No. 10 in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll earlier this month.

Cal State LA, who was ranked No. 5 in the nation in the preseason poll, took the top spot in the conference, capturing 140 points and 9 first-place votes. The Broncos had a total of 132 points, while also being one of three other teams to receive a first-place vote.

The CCAA once again appeared all over the preseason Top 25 rankings, seeing four teams receive votes. Cal State LA came in at No. 5, Cal Poly Pomona at No. 10, Chico State at No. 18, and Cal State Monterey Bay receiving votes.

CCAA Preseason Poll
1. Cal State LA – 140 pts (9)
2. Cal Poly Pomona – 132 pts (1)
3. Cal State Monterey Bay – 109 pts
4. Chico State – 103 pts
5. Cal State San Bernardino – 91 pts (1)
6. Cal State Dominguez Hills – 85 pts (1)
7. Cal State San Marcos – 72 pts
8. Sonoma State – 58 pts
9. Cal State East Bay – 56 pts
10. Cal Poly Humboldt – 39 pts
11. Stanislaus State – 32 pts
12. San Francisco State – 19 pts

The Broncos have high expectations heading into the 2024 season, having made eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and reaching at least the Second Round in each of head coach Matt O'Sullivan's four seasons at the helm. Under O'Sullivan, CPP has a staggering 51-15-18 overall record, good for a .714 winning percentage. Last season's 14-2-5 record was the best since the team finished national runner-up in 2015.

Despite graduating three All-American seniors, CPP will return a wealth of talent in 2024. Leading the team will be three senior captains in Fin Jackson, Mauro Rafael, and Jasper Winslow. An All-West Region honoree in 2023, Winslow is one of the more decorated athletes on the roster, also being named an Academic All-American last year.

Four Broncos were named to the CCAA Preseason Watchlist, having earned First Team or Second Team honors last season or being named to the CCAA All-Tournament team. Those four include Mads Frederiksen, Marcus Jorgensen, Sam Lena, and Winslow. In addition, Jackson, Woody Angell, and Max Laguna were named All-CCAA Honorable Mentions in 2023 – making for seven returning athletes that earned some form of conference recognition last season.

The Green & Gold added some transfer talent as well, including senior midfielder Marc Birkelund, who was a three-time All-Peach Belt Conference honoree at Division II Flagler College in Florida.

The Broncos will open the season with a pair of road matches at Biola and Point Loma on September 5th and 7th, respectively, followed by four consecutive home matches against PacWest and RMAC competition. The CCAA opener will take place at Cal State San Bernardino on September 28th, with the first home CCAA game being against San Francisco State on October 4th. The CCAA Tournament will be held at Pioneer Stadium on the campus of Cal State East Bay this year, the first time that venue will host the event. To view the 2024 schedule, click HERE.
