8/23/2024 12:00:00 PM

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team was ranked first in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) preseason poll on Thursday afternoon. The Broncos are coming off their first regular season title in program history, going 11-5-3 during the 2023 campaign.

"At this point in the year, the rankings are only a perception of potential," said head coach Jay Mason. "I'm very proud of our group's commitment and growth so far, and hope to build on their hard work to this point heading into another very challenging season."

The team received 134 points and six first-place votes in the poll, narrowly edging out Cal State San Marcos at 133 points. San Marcos, along with Cal State LA and Stanislaus State, also received first-place votes.

The Broncos look to repeat as CCAA champions in 2024, returning nearly all of their starting lineup and being led by two-time CCAA Coach of the Year, Jay Mason. Among the returners are four United Soccer Coaches All-West Region honorees in Liberty Ortiz, Tara Oper, Jaclyn Cuevas, and Auburn Burnett.

The team is also returning all seven of their All-CCAA honorees, including Bella Anderson, Bella Hara, and Marisa Salazar, as well as the four west region recipients mentioned previously. Giselle Samayoa, a junior defender who recently played for the Guatemala National Team, was also named to the preseason watchlist for being named to the CCAA All-Tournament team last season.

"The veterans will play a key role in mentoring our new additions and modeling our team identity day in and day out," continued Mason. "Their experiences last season are huge contributors to the goals this team has set for themselves. They have a bit of a chip on their shoulder, and believe they have something to prove."

The Green & Gold added some talented transfer depth, including forward Angelina Rivas, forward/midfielder Vanessa Cruz, midfielder Lavinia Vaipulu, and forward Chloe Green. All four transfers earned some form of conference recognition at their previous institutions, with Cruz and Green each being named conference player of the year last season.

"We have an extremely deep and talented team," said Mason. "This fall, we plan to play aggressively, at speed, while controlling tempo and space on both sides of the ball."

The Broncos will open the 2024 campaign with three consecutive home matches, the season opener being against Vanguard on September 5th in the Lions' first-ever contest as an NCAA Division II institution. CPP will then head on the road with a match at Westmont and a road trip to Colorado against RMAC competition. The CCAA opener will take place at Cal State San Bernardino on September 28th, with the first home CCAA match being against San Francisco State on October 4th.

The CCAA Tournament will be held at College Creek Soccer Field on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt, the first time that venue will host the women's soccer tournament. To view the 2024 schedule, click HERE.
