LEXINGTON, Kentucky – Cal Poly Pomona's
Sarah Ybarra was named AVCA Division II National Player of the Week on Tuesday, after leading the Broncos to a perfect 4-0 start in the Yotes Classic Showcase in San Bernardino. The Broncos defeated three nationally-ranked opponents to open the season, climbing from No. 21 to No. 10 in the latest AVCA Top 25 Poll – the program's highest ranking since 2005.
Ybarra averaged 5.64 points per set and hit .313 in the wins, leading the team in kills in three of the four matches. The sophomore had 65 kills and 30 digs, along with six aces and 15 blocks, to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
In the 3-1 win over No. 12 Chaminade, Ybarra set a new career-high with 21 kills and an impressive .409 attack percentage. She nearly earned a double-double in that match as well, coming one dig short with nine. In addition to leading the team in multiple statistical categories, she also ranks Top 10 in the CCAA in kills, kills per set, total blocks, aces, and points.
The sophomore out of La Habra is just the second Bronco to ever earn the honor, after
Daisy Duke received the same recognition during both the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The Broncos will travel up to Central Washington for three matches spread across three days. Visit the volleyball
