SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Broncos completed the sweep of the 2024 Yotes Classic Showcase on Saturday night, defeating Biola 3-0 for their fourth win of the season. No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona was the only team in the tournament to go a perfect 4-0, while No. 10 St. Cloud State was the only other team to capture at least three wins. Six of the seven teams in the tournament were nationally ranked in the AVCA Preseason Top 25 poll.
Â
Sarah Ybarra and
Caitie Mueller shined in the showcase, each being named to the All-Tournament Team and Mueller also being named the Tournament MVP. The San Clemente native collected 134 assists on the weekend, having no fewer than 28 in each match. She also collected exactly eight digs in each match, totaling 32 on the weekend, to go along with 12 kills and four aces.
Â
Ybarra also received All-Tournament honors, adding 15 kills against the Eagles to total 65 on the weekend. She now accounts for over 35 percent of the team's kills to start the year, while averaging 4.64 kills per set.
Â
Cal Poly Pomona controlled every facet of the game against Biola, highlighted by an impressive .292 hitting percentage to the Eagles' .041 in the match. With the score at 6-5 in favor of CPP in the first set, the Green & Gold went on a 10-3 run to take a commanding 16-8 lead. That lead would not drop below five, resulting in a set one win of 25-15, while also seeing the Broncos take six of the last seven points. Appropriately, Ybarra collected the final point on an assist from Mueller.
Â
The second set would prove to be more challenging, as Biola went on a 9-1 tear to take a 14-9 lead. Down by three later in the set, multiple kills by
Madison Novak and service aces by
Avery Percival helped CPP go on a six-point run to regain a 23-21 lead. Percival, Novak, and Ybarra all lead the team with six service aces through the first four games of the season. The Broncos closed out the second set with a big block by
Helen McMullin and Ybarra, hanging on for a 25-23 win.
Â
The final set resembled the first, seeing the Eagles with a negative attack percentage and the Broncos swinging at a blistering .462 clip. With CPP up 20-11, sophomore transfer
Charlotte Koerber collected her first three kills as a Bronco in the final five points, securing the sweep.
