2025 Baseball Preseason Poll

Baseball Picked Second in CCAA Preseason Poll

1/27/2025 6:00:00 PM

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team was ranked number two in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) preseason poll, it was announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. The 2025 season will mark the 65th season of Bronco baseball, having started in 1960, and will be the 14th under head coach Randy Betten.

CPP baseball has now been ranked in the Top 3 of the CCAA preseason poll in each of the past 10 consecutive seasons (2025 – 2nd, 2024 – 3rd, 2023 – 2nd, 2022 – 1st, 2020 – 3rd, 2019 – 2nd, 2018 – 3rd, 2017 – 1st, 2016 – 1st, and 2015 – 2nd). In that span, they have claimed five CCAA titles, including two in the regular season and three in the conference tournament.

Three-time reigning CCAA champions Cal State Monterey Bay took the top spot in the conference, receiving 119 points and nine first place votes. Cal State San Marcos finished close behind the Broncos with 97 points and also receiving one first place vote.

2. Cal Poly Pomona – 106 pts (1)
3. Cal State San Marcos – 97 pts (1)
4. San Francisco State – 82 pts
5. Chico State – 79 pts
6. Cal State San Bernardino – 59 pts
7. Cal State LA – 45 pts
7. Cal State Dominguez Hills – 45 pts
9. Cal State East Bay – 41 pts
10. Sonoma State – 29 pts
11. Stanislaus State – 23 pts

The Broncos are returning a loaded lineup in 2025, including All-West Region catcher Johnny Pappas and outfielder Jack Sanders, as well as All-CCAA outfielder Anthony Gibbons and first baseman Marco Malerba. The lineup will be deep with returning veteran talent, including seniors Beau Betten, Brent Cota, and Tyler Chaffee. Cota, the 2023 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Winner for centerfield, was the lone Bronco to start in all 56 games last season, while Malerba, Pappas, and Gibbons started in all but one game.

"Our goal is, and always has been, to win a national championship," said Coach Betten. "Our first step towards this goal is to create a team-first mentality. CPP baseball has always had a certain type of play that is centered around pitching and defense. We emphasize energy and effort when practicing and playing, and this group takes that to heart. We are lucky to have some instrumental veteran leadership that will be the anchor in our journey this season."

The starting rotation will look quite a bit different from last season, with Evan Adolphus being the lone returner from a rotation that donned the only sub-5.00 ERA in the conference. However, veteran arms such as Ruben Del Castillo, Chris Fields, Aren Alvarez, Andrew Campbell, and Dylan Esquival should help guide the Pomona staff, in addition to a plethora of new talent.

Associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Jenzen Torres and assistant coach Anthony Mizrahi, along with Betten, were hard at work bringing in 18 new faces to the program over summer. This new crop of talent should help fill in the gaps on an already talented team, while providing even more depth in the lineup, in the rotation, and in the bullpen.

The Broncos will open the season at home this Friday, January 31st, with a three-game series against No. 25 Westmont. They will then host No. 10 Colorado Mesa in a four-game series, before splitting a home/road series with The Master's to conclude non-conference play. CPP will open CCAA play against Cal State Monterey Bay, who is also nationally ranked in the preseason Top 25, the following weekend starting on February 21st.

The 2025 CCAA Tournament will be held at Reeder Field on the campus of Cal State LA from May 7-10th, the first time the venue has hosted the tournament since 2007. Only the top six teams in the conference standings will make the conference tournament. The NCAA Selection Show will take place the day following the tournament, May 11th, on NCAA.com, with the NCAA Division II Tournament commencing the following week. The Broncos look to make their fifth consecutive NCAA appearance, and 10th in their past 11 seasons.
