POMONA, Calif. - A relentless attacking effort and a dominant second half weren't quite enough for Cal Poly Pomona to come away with a win on Friday, as the Broncos settled for a 1-1 draw against Chico State at Kellogg Stadium. The result moves CPP to 5-1-4 overall and 0-0-2 in CCAA play.
Despite controlling possession and dictating the pace for most of the match, the Broncos found themselves trailing early after conceding in the ninth minute. The goal came despite Cal Poly Pomona controlling the early momentum and ended up being Chico's lone shot on target for the entire match.
CPP wasted no time in responding. Five minutes later, Marvin Gamez reignited the momentum by finishing a well-placed pass from Sam Lena to level the score. The goal marked Gamez's fifth of the season and capped a strong early surge from the Broncos, who ended the first half with a 7-4 edge in shots.
The second half saw Cal Poly Pomona continue to press. They created quality chances from open play and set pieces, outshooting Chico State 7-2 in the final 45 minutes and finishing with a 14-6 advantage overall. CPP also won the corner kick battle, 7-4, and looked the likelier team to break the deadlock as the match wore on.
Jakob Singh, who showed early activity, recorded two shots on goal, while Daniel Gutierrez and Sam Lena each added one shot on target. On the defensive end, the Broncos were rarely threatened. Jack Chapman went untested after the early goal, thanks to a composed back line that allowed just one shot on target all game. The match was physical but controlled, with CPP committing eight fouls to Chico's eleven.
