Broncos’ Late Push Couldn’t Break Deadlock with Warriors

POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona battled to a 1-1 draw against Stanislaus State on Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium, moving the Broncos to 9-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in CCAA play. In front of their home crowd, the Broncos controlled stretches of the match but were ultimately forced to settle for a point after both teams struck in the second half.

The first half was evenly played, with each team generating a handful of chances but unable to capitalize. CPP nearly took the lead in the 36th minute when they earned a penalty kick, but the shot missed wide. Goalkeeper Jenna Tetrault kept the match scoreless going into the break with three saves, including a key stop on a close-range effort from the Warriors.

In the second half, Cal Poly Pomona broke through in the 59th minute when Anna Schellpeper scored off an assist from Georgia Rink to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. The goal came during a strong offensive spell that saw CPP push numbers forward. However, Stanislaus State responded just over ten minutes later.

The Broncos continued to press in search of a winner, with late chances from Angelina Rivas, Abria Smith, and Vanessa Cruz, but Stanislaus' goalkeeper came up with several big saves to preserve the draw. CPP finished with a 12-10 edge in total shots and an 8-5 advantage in the second half alone but couldn't convert down the stretch.
