Gamez’s Brace Highlights Cal Poly Pomona’s 3-0 Win Over UC Merced

MERCED, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona secured their first CCAA win and shutout of the season with a convincing 3-0 victory over UC Merced. The Broncos improved their overall record to 6-3-4 and moved to 1-2-2 in conference play. Adding to the significance of the match, this was the first time in program history that Cal Poly Pomona had ever faced UC Merced, making the win an important milestone for the team.

From the outset, Cal Poly Pomona showed strong aggression and created several scoring opportunities. The breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Marvin Gamez calmly converted a penalty kick, putting the Broncos ahead 1-0 and setting the tone for the rest of the game. Despite UC Merced's efforts to mount a response, Cal Poly Pomona's defense remained resolute, supported by goalkeeper Jack Chapman who made crucial saves to maintain a clean sheet.

The Broncos continued to dominate possession and extended their lead midway through the second half. At the 56th minute, Gamez struck again, this time assisted by Miguel Gonzalez, doubling the lead to 2-0. The team's confidence was evident as they maintained pressure, refusing to relent. Late in the match, Devin Jenkins sealed the win with a well-placed goal assisted by Aleksandar Somov, making the final score 3-0.

Statistically, Cal Poly Pomona outshot UC Merced 12 to five, with five shots on goal compared to UC Merced's two. Both goalkeepers made two saves, but Chapman's defense was resolute throughout the match. The Broncos held a slight edge in corner kicks and managed the game well, balancing physicality with discipline.

This important victory marks a step forward for Cal Poly Pomona as they look to climb the CCAA standings.
