POMONA, Calif - No. 3 Cal Poly Pomona played to a 2-2 draw against Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday evening in the Cal Poly Clash match for women's soccer. The result moved the Broncos to 11-1-2 overall and 4-1-2 in CCAA play.
The Broncos came out strong from the opening whistle, quickly establishing control in the attacking half. In the fifth minute,
Vanessa Cruz converted a penalty kick after an early foul inside the box, giving Cal Poly Pomona a 1-0 lead and breaking the CPP career record for penalty kick goals with four. Humboldt responded less than two minutes later to even the score, but the Broncos continued to push forward. In the 21st minute,
Angelina Rivas was awarded the team's second penalty of the match and calmly finished her shot to put Pomona ahead 2-1.
The first half featured a physical battle, with numerous fouls and yellow cards handed out to both teams. Despite these disruptions, the Broncos created several strong scoring opportunities. Cruz and
Marisa Salazar each challenged the Humboldt goalkeeper with shots that required saves. Cal Poly Pomona maintained their one-goal advantage at halftime, having outshot Humboldt 6-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
The second half saw Humboldt increase its offensive pressure. In the 52nd minute, the Lumberjacks found the equalizer to bring the game level at 2-2. From that point on, Cal Poly Pomona dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities but could not find the finishing touch. Cruz and Rivas continued to threaten up front, combining for four shots on goal.
Morgan Huff added two more shots on target, while
Braedyn Kincade and Salazar each tested the goalkeeper with dangerous attempts.
The Broncos finished the match with 14 total shots, including eight on goal, compared to five shots for Humboldt. Pomona also earned six corner kicks and committed 10 fouls in a hard-fought performance. Goalkeeper
Jenna Tetrault played all 90 minutes, recording one save. The back line, led by
Mikaela Marr and
Liberty Ortiz, limited Humboldt's chances throughout the night.
