SEASIDE, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona, ranked No. 11 nationally, opened its CCAA schedule with a 1-1 draw against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon. The result moves the Broncos to 5-1-3 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
Cal Poly Pomona took the lead early, scoring in the ninth minute. Senior forward Jakob Singh recorded his second goal of the season with a strike from the top of the box. The goal was set up by Sam Lena, who delivered a well-placed assist.
The Broncos nearly extended their lead in the first half, generating several attacking chances. In the 37th minute, Cal State Monterey Bay was awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Goalkeeper Jack Chapman denied the Otters, diving to his right for the save and preserving the 1-0 lead into halftime. Chapman finished with four saves on 13 total shots faced.
Both teams continued to push in the second half. Singh and Aleksandar Somov each had efforts on goal, but the Monterey Bay goalkeeper held firm, making five saves overall. In the final minute of regulation, the Otters found the equalizer.
The match was closely contested statistically. Cal State Monterey Bay held a slight edge in total shots, 13 to 11, and in corner kicks, 6 to 3. Cal Poly Pomona led in shots on goal, 6 to 5. Singh led the Broncos in offense with four total shots and two on goal. Lena contributed three shots, two of which were on frame, and the assist.
