Broncos Hold Firm to Start CCAA Campaign with 1-0 Victory

SEASIDE, Calif. – No. 1 Cal Poly Pomona picked up right where they left off last season, starting their CCAA campaign with a strong statement. The defending CCAA regular season and tournament champions began their title defense with a 1-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon. The victory keeps the Broncos perfect on the year, improving to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

In a match defined by pressure and persistence, it was senior forward Vanessa Cruz who made the difference. After drawing a foul in the box in the 70th minute, Cruz stepped up and buried the penalty kick for the game's only goal. It marked her sixth goal of the season and capped off a standout performance where she led the team with four total shots and two on frame.

The Broncos dominated from the opening whistle, outshooting the Otters 17-6 and forcing the Monterey Bay goalkeeper into five saves. Cal Poly Pomona's attack came in waves, with early chances from Kiarra D'Arcangelo, Marisa Salazar, and Cruz narrowly missing or getting denied. Despite nine first-half shots, the Broncos couldn't find the net before the break, with the Otters making four saves to keep the game scoreless.

After the break, the Broncos maintained their attacking pressure, generating five corner kicks and keeping the Otters under constant pressure. Lavinia Vaipulu provided a spark with two shots, including one that forced a save in the 58th minute. Just over ten minutes later, Cruz drew contact in the box and converted the penalty kick to put the Broncos ahead.

Defensively, Cal Poly Pomona stayed organized and compact. Goalkeeper Jenna Tetrault made one save to preserve her fourth shutout of the season, while the back line limited Monterey Bay to just one shot on goal across 90 minutes.
