POMONA, Calif. – The No. 21 ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team continued its dominant run through the CCAA with a straight-set sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills, 25-13, 25-19, 25-22, on Thursday night in Kellogg Arena. The victory kept the Broncos undefeated in conference play at 17-0 (19-4 overall), while also tying the program record for most CCAA wins in a season – set just last year when the team went 17-1.
Charlotte Koerber led the attack with 14 kills on .286 hitting while adding nine digs and two blocks, finishing with a team-high 16.5 points. Fellow outside
Elle Walker matched her with 14 kills on .281 hitting, recording multiple key swings in each set to keep momentum on the Broncos' side. Setter
Kacie Caoili tallied 33 assists and 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
In the opening set, Cal Poly Pomona quickly asserted control behind a 13-5 run fueled by Koerber and Walker, forcing an early timeout from the Toros. The Broncos hit an impressive .412 in the frame and sided out at an 85 percent clip. Middle blocker
Alexia Athans sparked the defense at the net with two blocks and a pair of kills, helping the Broncos close the set 25-13. Athans would go on to finish the match with six total blocks, including two solo and four assisted.
Set two followed a similar script, with the Green & Gold jumping to an 11-4 lead after three straight kills from Koerber. The Toros fought back within four, but
Addi Knight and Walker delivered crucial kills late, while Koerber's ace pushed CPP to set point. Walker sealed the frame 25-19 with her 12
th kill of the night.
The third set saw Cal State Dominguez Hills threaten with its strongest push of the match, seeing the set tied at 10-10. Cal Poly Pomona answered with a 9-2 burst behind
Renee Nachtigall's serving. The Toros closed within one late, but back-to-back kills by Athans and Knight clinched the 25-22 win and the sweep.
The Broncos out-hit the Toros .284 to .124 and dominated at the net with nine team blocks. Libero
Kaden Young led the backcourt with 19 digs, as CPP also led the Toros 60-37 in team digs.
NCAA Regional Rankings
On Wednesday, the NCAA released the first official regional rankings, seeing the Broncos come in at No. 8 in the West Region. They were the only CCAA school in the top eight, as there were two PacWest schools and five GNAC. If the rankings do not change, the Broncos would make their 21
st NCAA Appearance down at Point Loma in early December. The final seeding will be announced during the NCAA Selection Show, taking place on Monday, November 24
th, at 4:30 PM PT on NCAA.com.
