Nelson Leads No. 14 Broncos to Comeback Victory With 1,000th Career Point

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 14 ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team stormed back from an early deficit to earn a 71-62 victory over Point Loma Nazarene on Friday afternoon in San Marcos. The Broncos overcame a sluggish first quarter with three consecutive 22-point periods, outscoring the Sea Lions 66-41 over the final 30 minutes to secure their first win of the season.

After falling behind 21-5 in the opening quarter, the Broncos flipped the game's momentum behind efficient team play and a smothering defensive effort. Cal Poly Pomona shot 47 percent from the field overall (27-for-57) and 80 percent from the free-throw line (12-for-15), while holding Point Loma to just 38 percent shooting.

Sydney Nelson sparked the turnaround with a strong second half, finishing the game with an impressive 30 points, marking the second 30-point game of her career. Her final free throw in the fourth quarter also marked her 1,000th career point, making her the 28th player in program history to score 1,000 points while wearing a CPP uniform.

Cal Poly Pomona's bench came alive after the first quarter, outscoring Point Loma's reserves 10-3 for the remainder of the game. The Broncos dominated the paint with a 30-16 scoring edge inside and posted an 8-2 advantage on second-chance points in the second half. Their ball movement proved critical as well, resulting in balanced scoring and four different players recording assists.

The fourth quarter showcased the Broncos' composure, shooting 50 percent from the field and 88.9 percent from the line in the final frame. Cal Poly Pomona closed on a 12-8 run over the last five minutes to build their largest lead of the night at nine points.

Brielle Minor finished with 12 points and seven assists, while Andrea Stajic added eight points to the scoresheet. Junior Mydrea Moore had a big presence down low with four rebounds and a team-leading three blocks.
