SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona led for nearly 36 minutes and built a 13-point first-half cushion, but Azusa Pacific rallied late as the Broncos fell, 54-53, in a neutral-site matchup at The Sports Center in San Marcos. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 1-1 on the season while the Cougars improve to 1-1.
CPP seized control early with an 8-0 first-quarter spurt on the way to a 14–10 lead, then clamped down defensively to take a 27-16 advantage into halftime. The Broncos held APU to 29 percent shooting on the day and matched the Cougars in paint points (26-26) while winning the glass, 48-41. Every single Bronco that saw the floor recorded at least one rebound, with all but two recording multiple.

Jeanette Fine paced Cal Poly Pomona with 13 points, adding defensive activity and a block.
Andrea Stajic nearly posted a double-double, finishing with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds in 39 minutes, while
Sydney Nelson supplied nine points and four boards. Freshman
Madison Eade chipped in eight points and five rebounds, while
Alexis Woodson and
Khamiyah Anderson each pulled down six rebounds off the bench.
After CPP carried a 41-36 edge into the fourth, the Broncos pushed the margin to eight at 44-36 with 8:03 left before APU mounted its comeback. In the closing minute, the Cougars edged ahead, but Nelson's late free throws brought the Broncos within a single point, including 54-53 with two seconds left, before time expired.
As a team, Cal Poly Pomona shot 19-for-59 (.322) and 14-for-20 (.700) at the stripe, with 14 points coming from the bench. Despite the result, CPP's defensive effort, rebounding edge, and extended stretches of control offer strong building blocks heading into next week's home action.
