Hawai‘i Heartbreaker: CPP Edged by UCCS

HILO, Hawai'i - Suffering their first setback of the season, the Broncos fell 85-84 on Saturday night in a dramatic, wire-to-wire battle against UC Colorado Springs at Vulcan Gymnasium. CPP battled through multiple momentum swings, rallied from several second-half deficits, and briefly held the lead in the final seconds before UCCS closed the game at the free-throw line to hand the Broncos their first setback of the year.

Cal Poly Pomona opened with efficient offense, shooting over 53 percent in the first half and using balanced production to settle into the neutral-site environment. Malcolm Bell established a strong interior presence with several finishes around the rim, while Kevin Simeth added energy with offensive rebounds. A three from Sam Hunter and a smooth jumper by Asher Schroeder helped CPP trim a 10-point deficit, sending the Broncos into halftime down just 40-36.

The second half developed into a high-tempo exchange as both teams found rhythm. The Broncos surged ahead behind a sequence that included a Simeth layup, a transition bucket from Demarreya Lewis-Cooper, and a hot stretch from Hunter, who knocked down multiple threes to help give CPP a 57-49 lead. UCCS responded with key outside shooting and second-chance opportunities, gradually chipping away at the margin and setting up a tight finish.

In the closing minutes, the game shifted into a possession-by-possession battle. Shyheim Parm hit a contested three from the left wing with 35 seconds remaining, giving CPP an 84-83 advantage and a late jolt of momentum. UCCS, however, drew a foul on its next possession and converted both free throws to move ahead 85-84 with five seconds left. The Broncos attempted to push for a final shot, but a turnover in the backcourt ended the rally and allowed the Mountain Lions to secure the win.
