No. 23 Volleyball Battles To Five-Set Thriller Against Gators

TURLOCK, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona volleyball took San Francisco State to the limit Friday night in the CCAA Tournament Semifinals at Fitzpatrick Arena, falling 3-2 (14-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 13-15). With the loss, the No. 23 ranked Broncos are now 19-6 overall on the season, while also making them 8-6 all-time in the CCAA Tournament.

Outside hitter Elle Walker led the Broncos' offensive charge with 17 kills, while Sarah Ybarra, in her first game back from injury, added 16 kills and seven digs. Setter Kacie Caoili ran a balanced offense, dishing out 47 assists and chipping in 13 digs for a double-double. Defensively, the Broncos shined with 101 total digs, their second-most of the season. Libero Kaden Young had 25 digs, followed closely by Charlotte Koerber with a career-high 24.

After dropping the opening set, the Broncos responded with a gritty second-set victory behind efficient swings from Kylie Leopard, who hit .444 in the frame, and key blocks by Ybarra and Leopard that sealed the 25-23 win. The third set featured six tie scores before San Francisco State edged ahead late, but the Green & Gold refused to fade. They dominated the fourth with a 12-3 run capped by three consecutive kills from Walker to force a decisive fifth set.

In the final set, Koerber provided timely offense with four kills, and a service ace by Renee Nachtigall gave CPP the lead at 10-9. However, the Gators took six of the final nine points to claim the match at 3-2. San Francisco State and Cal State San Bernardino will now face off in the CCAA Tournament finals.

Up Next
The Broncos await the NCAA Selection Show, taking place Monday at 4:30 PM PT, to see if their season continues. The team was ranked No. 8 in the latest regional rankings, and should they remain in the top eight, they will compete in the NCAA Tournament on December 4-6th. If they do not hear their name called on Monday, it will mark the conclusion of the 2025 season.
