POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona continued its strong early-season form with a 61-57 win over Cal State LA in Thursday's CCAA opener, relying on sharp perimeter shooting and tough late-game defense to improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
CPP opened the night with steady defensive pressure that forced early Golden Eagle turnovers and helped the Broncos find a rhythm offensively.
Sam Hunter set the tone from beyond the arc, knocking down multiple threes in the first half, while
Jake Goldberg and
Edric Dennis added key shots to keep the Broncos within reach during a tightly contested opening period.
Malcolm Bell played an important role on the defensive glass, and
Shyheim Parm provided timely playmaking, sending CPP into halftime tied at 30-30.
The Broncos found more flow offensively in the second half. Hunter continued his hot shooting from beyond the arc, knocking down three quick threes to swing the momentum in CPP's favor. Bell added a powerful fastbreak dunk and continued to control the interior, while
Zach Broadous hit a three to stretch the margin. Strong rebounding from
Kevin Simeth, who finished with 10, limited second-chance opportunities for Cal State LA.
Hunter led the offense with 18 points on six three-pointers, Bell added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Goldberg provided 8 points off the bench. Parm directed the offense with five assists, while Simeth anchored the interior presence.
Sturdy defensive stands, disciplined rebounding, and poised late possessions allowed the Broncos to close out the 61-57 victory and open conference play on a strong note.
