POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona fell 52-43 to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon, a matchup that saw the Broncos control much of the first half before an extended second-half scoring drought that shifted the game away from them.
The Broncos opened the afternoon with confident ball movement and disciplined defense, forcing tough Toros possessions while establishing their own flow in transition. Malcolm Bell jumped out to a fast start, knocking down threes and finishing at the rim to help CPP build a double-digit lead. Jake Goldberg added a spark with a three and a driving finish, and Shyheim Parm orchestrated the offense with composed pacing and timely passing. Behind steady interior rebounding from Kevin Simeth and a series of efficient drives from Bell, the Broncos carried a 31-24 advantage into halftime, appearing firmly in control of the matchup.
But the momentum shifted sharply in the second half. CPP struggled to generate clean looks, opening the period with extended scoring droughts that stalled its offense. While the Broncos continued to defend with effort, Dominguez Hills chipped away with second-chance opportunities and aggressive drives. A layup tied the game at 37-37, and moments later the Toros seized the lead for good behind transition baskets and physical play in the paint.
Bell continued to battle, finishing with 18 points and two steals, while Simeth added six points and seven rebounds to steady the interior. Goldberg contributed eight points and Parm tallied four assists, but CPP's shooting challenges proved too difficult to overcome. Turnovers also mounted, limiting the Broncos' ability to regain momentum down the stretch.
Despite a strong defensive effort and a dominant first half, Cal Poly Pomona couldn't rediscover its offensive rhythm late, falling 52-43 in the conference contest.
