Broncos Stay Perfect on the Road with CCAA Win at UC Merced

MERCED, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona picked up another impressive road victory Friday night, defeating UC Merced 79-65 behind efficient offense and consistent defensive pressure to improve to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in CCAA play.

CPP established control early, forcing turnovers and converting them into scoring opportunities. Malcolm Bell and Demarreya Lewis-Cooper sparked the offense in the opening minutes, combining strong finishes inside with perimeter shooting to build a steady lead. Jake Goldberg knocked down an early three, and the Broncos' ball movement helped stretch the margin to double digits. Despite a late push from UC Merced, Pomona closed the half strong and carried a 39-26 advantage into the break.

The Broncos maintained their momentum in the second half as UC Merced attempted to cut into the deficit. Lewis-Cooper and Kevin Simeth provided stability in the paint, with Bell providing timely shooting from long range to steady the Broncos. Pomona's defense remained active, generating steals, limiting second-chance looks, and turning stops into points as the lead remained comfortably in double figures.

A decisive stretch came midway through the half when the Broncos capitalized on turnovers with back-to-back finishes at the rim, including highlight plays from Bell and Shyheim Parm. The run pushed the lead to 17 and allowed CPP to control the final minutes.

Bell led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while Lewis-Cooper added 18 points on an efficient 7-of-11 performance. Simeth chipped in 12 points and five rebounds, and Edric Dennis added 10 points. Cal Poly Pomona finished the night shooting 53.4 percent from the field, scored 44 points in the paint, and tallied 19 points off turnovers to seal the road win.
