TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured a first round bye in the upcoming CCAA Tournament with a 72-61 win at Stanislaus State on Thursday night, locking in second place in the conference standings. This is the 10
th time in Bishop's 14 seasons that CPP has finished Top 3 in the conference during the regular season, and the sixth time they have finished in the top two. With the win, the No. 16 ranked Broncos improve to 23-4 overall and 18-3 in CCAA play, while their 12 road wins marks the most in a season since 2000.
Stanislaus State (5-22, 4-17 CCAA) jumped out to an early 21-16 lead in the first quarter, however the Broncos responded with a commanding 22-13 performance in the second quarter to regain control of the game.
Kalaya Buggs helped lead the offensive charge with 17 points, including five three-pointers and nine rebounds, while
Sydney Nelson poured in a game-high 18 points on an efficient 9-of-13 shooting. Buggs' first basket of the game marked the 1,000
th point of her collegiate career, including time spent at Coastal Carolina. She becomes the third Bronco this season to eclipse the 1K point career milestone.
The Broncos found their groove in the second period, shooting a blistering 60% from the field, capped off by a three-pointer from
Alexis Woodson to send the Broncos into half with a 38-34 lead. Woodson finished with 10 points in the game, her third time contributing double figures to the scoresheet this season.
In the third quarter, Cal Poly Pomona's defense continued to hold strong, limiting the Warriors to just 35.7% shooting and 13 points. Meanwhile,
Khamiyah Anderson anchored the paint, pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds to give the Broncos a crucial edge on the boards.
Despite a 27-point outburst from Stanislaus State's Da'Myiah Lewis, the Broncos never wavered. Their defensive pressure forced 19 turnovers, leading to 21 points in transition. The bench also played a key role, chipping in 16 points.
Cal Poly Pomona closed out the fourth quarter with poise, securing the victory and maintaining momentum headed into the final game of the regular season.
