CARSON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't hold off first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-4 in the series opener at Toro Field. The Broncos have yet to win a road game this season, while also falling to 7-15 overall and 4-9 in CCAA play, marking their sixth one-run loss of the season.
Â
The Broncos struck first, putting up two runs in the first frame of the game.
Johnny Pappas and
Julian Angulo reached base to set up
Marco Malerba, who delivered an RBI single to right field.
Anthony Gibbons followed with a single of his own to left center, plating Malerba to give CPP a quick 2-0 advantage.
Â
Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-9, 9-4 CCAA) chipped away in the second with an RBI double, cutting the Broncos' lead to 2-1. The Toros then took control in the fifth, coming from a solo home run to left center and a subsequent RBI triple to right center to gain a 3-2 lead.
Â
The Toros extended the score to 5-2 in the seventh, capitalizing on an RBI single and bases-loaded walk. The Broncos did not go away quietly, fighting back in the eighth when
Beau Betten delivered a two-run single through the left side to bring CPP back within a run. Betten was the lone Bronco to record multiple hits in the contest, with five of the six coming from the middle of the order. However, the late push wasn't enough, as CSUDH shut the door in the ninth to secure the win.

Starting pitcher
Anthony Cosme (1-3) took the loss despite another solid effort, going 6.1 innings while allowing four earned runs on 11 hits. In his past three starts, Cosme is sporting a 3.48 ERA over 18.1 innings with 13 strikeouts to just three walks.
Colt Tucker and
Evan Adolphus combined for 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
