POMONA, Calif. – The Broncos dropped the series finale to Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday, losing by a final score of 10-7. With the loss, CPP falls to 7-14 on the season and 4-8 in conference play, while also losing their second consecutive CCAA series.
Â
The Broncos started strong, striking first in the bottom of the third inning. With one out,
Julian Angulo came through with a bases-clearing double down the left-field line, scoring
Brent Cota,
Johnny Pappas, and
Gage Gonzales to give Cal Poly Pomona the 3-0 lead.
Â
However, the Coyotes responded with an explosive fourth inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely hitting. Cal State San Bernardino plated eight runs on six hits in the frame, aided by an error and a hit-by-pitch. The rally was capped by a two-run single up the middle from Tyler Vanneste, giving CSUSB an 8-3 advantage.
Â
Cal Poly Pomona chipped away at the deficit in the bottom half of the fourth when Gonzales drove in
Beau Betten with an RBI single to left, making it 8-4. The Broncos continued to battle in the fifth, as
Marco Malerba delivered an RBI single to score
Anthony Gibbons, cutting the Yotes' lead to 8-5.
Â
The game settled down in the middle innings as both teams' bullpens held firm.
Aren Alvarez,
Colt Tucker, and
Anthony Vasquez provided quality relief for Cal Poly Pomona, limiting San Bernardino to just two runs over the final 5.1 frames. The Yotes added an insurance run in the seventh on a solo home run, extending their lead to 9-5.
Â
The Broncos mounted a late rally in the eighth. With two outs,
Sebastian Arguelles laced a double to left-center, bringing home
Robbie Treto and Betten to bring Cal Poly Pomona within two at 9-7. But the Yotes tacked on another run in the ninth on an RBI triple, pushing their lead to 10-7.
Â
Ruben Del Castillo (1-2) took the loss for the Broncos, allowing eight runs (only one earned) over 3.2 innings. The senior is currently sporting a 3.72 ERA this season with just one earned run in his last 7.1 innings of work.
Â
Despite 10 hits in the game and multiple clutch swings with runners on base, the Broncos were unable to overcome the massive fourth inning, allowing CSUSB to hold on for the series win.
