Broncos Say Goodbye to Seawolves
On January 22
nd, 2025, Sonoma State University
announced that their athletics department would be eliminated due to budget cuts. This means Sunday's game at Scolinos Field marked the final regular season game in Sonoma State Athletics history, and the final game ever played for Sonoma State baseball. SSU softball, track & field, and golf will still be competing in the postseason in the coming weeks.
Â
Cal Poly Pomona and Sonoma State baseball first met in 1991, with the Broncos winning their first three meetings. The Broncos would end up going 52-58 all-time against SSU over the next 34 years, including 41-47 in conference games and 5-3 in the postseason.
Â
The two teams have been evenly matched for nearly their entire history, as neither has won nor lost more than five consecutive games at a time. Additionally, CPP's all-time run total is 615, while Sonoma State is 617 – just a -2 run differential spread across 110 games. CPP is 3-2 in extra-inning games, 22-28 at Scolinos Field, and 26-27 all-time at Rohnert Park.
Â
In 2011, head coach
Randy Betten's first year at the helm, the Seawolves defeated the Broncos in the West Region title game to advance to the DII College World Series for the second time in program history. CPP would then go 2-0 in their next two postseason meetings, both conference tournament games in 2014 and 2024.
