Broncos Open 2025 Season with No. 1 CCAA Ranking

8/26/2025 3:00:00 PM

ALISO VIEJO, CALIF. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team enters the 2025 season with strong momentum, having been named the preseason favorite in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Coaches' Poll. The Broncos received 112 points and secured four first-place votes to claim the top spot in the poll, which was released Tuesday by the conference office. CPP is coming off a successful 2024 campaign in which they captured the CCAA regular season title and finished as runners-up in the conference tournament. On the national stage, the Broncos were also recognized earlier this month, landing at No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 preseason rankings.

2025 CCAA Preseason Poll:
1. Cal Poly Pomona - 112 pts (4)
2. Cal State LA - 105 pts (3)
3. Cal State Dominguez Hills - 104 pts (2)
T4. Cal State East Bay - 75 pts (1)
T4. Cal State Monterey Bay - 75 pts
6. Cal State San Bernardino - 64 pts (1)
7. Chico State - 61 pts
8. Stanislaus State - 51 pts
9. Cal State San Marcos - 29 pts
10. UC Merced - 27 pts
11. Cal Poly Humboldt - 23 pts

Under the leadership of head coach Matt O'Sullivan, the Broncos have become a fixture on the national stage. Now entering his sixth season, O'Sullivan has continued the winning tradition of the program, as the Broncos have reached nine consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances since 2015, with the team reaching at least the Second Round in each of his five years at the helm. Last season, he became the winningest coach in program history, boasting a career record of 64-17-25, and was named the 2024 CCAA Coach of the Year.

"It's always nice to be recognized in any poll," said O'Sullivan. "But preseason rankings are based on previous performances. We need to focus on this season, and we'll have a lot to prove with a new group of players. I feel the guys will be excited to get to work."

Despite some roster turnover, the Broncos return a strong core of experienced players. Senior forward Sam Lena and senior goalkeeper Luke Garciduenas both earned All-West Region Second Team honors last season. Senior forward Jakob Singh and sophomore midfielder Daniel Gutierrez were each named All-CCAA Honorable Mention, and will look to play key roles in CPP's 2025 campaign.

The Broncos will kick off their season at home with non-conference matches against Biola on September 4th and Point Loma on September 6th at Kellogg Stadium. CCAA play begins on the road at Cal State Monterey Bay on October 3rd, with the conference home opener scheduled for October 10th against Chico State.

The 2025 CCAA Tournament will be held at Cardinale Stadium in Seaside, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay.
