Somov’s Hat Trick Highlights Broncos’ Win Against Westmont

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer delivered an electric performance on Saturday evening, defeating Westmont College 6-2 at Kellogg Stadium in one of the program's most dominant offensive displays in recent years. The victory was headlined by a hat trick from Aleksandar Somov, the 16th in program history and the first since 2022, as the Broncos scored six goals in a match for just the fifth time ever.

The match didn't start in CPP's favor, as Westmont got on the board early in the 8th minute. However, the Broncos responded with composure and intensity. In the 26th minute, Daniel Hernandez leveled the score 1-1 with a confident penalty kick. Cal Poly Pomona then took control of the game. Just before halftime, Joseph Spencer found the back of the net off an assist from Sam Lena to put the Broncos ahead 2-1 at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, the Broncos immediately seized momentum. Less than six minutes into the second half, Somov scored his first of the day on a sharp finish assisted by Daniel Gutierrez. Just two minutes later, Marvin Gamez buried his first collegiate goal, assisted by Noah Ko, to extend the lead to 4-1. "The second the ball went in, I ran with excitement couldn't stop smiling and shouting. My teammates' celebrated with me so it made the moment even bigger, and scoring my first college goal was nothing but pure joy," said Gamez.

Somov wasn't done yet. In the 61st minute, he struck again after linking up with teammates Devin Jenkins and Victor Casillas, making it 5-1 and putting the match firmly out of reach. Westmont found the net in the 63rd minute, but the goal did little to change the outcome. Somov completed his historic hat trick in the 90th minute, scoring off a clever assist from Jakob Singh to cap off the 6-2 win. "It felt like all this hard work and patience finally paid off," said Somov.

The Broncos were solid throughout, with goalkeeper Luke Garciduenas making several key saves to maintain the lead. The defense, anchored by Emiliano Garcia and a rotating backline, held strong despite Westmont's persistent efforts to get back into the game.

"I am proud of the team for bouncing back from that early goal so now we can use this momentum from the last two games to go away to Colorado and get two more wins," said Spencer.
