DENVER, Colo. - A dominant second-half performance powered the Broncos to a 3-0 win over MSU Denver, securing their first shutout of the season and highlighting their ability to convert chances through headers.
After a physical and tightly contested first half that ended scoreless, Cal Poly Pomona found its breakthrough just three minutes into the second period. Clement Badger, coming off the bench, opened the scoring in the 48th minute, heading in a well-placed cross from Aleksandar Somov. Badger's impact was immediate and efficient, he tallied two shots on goal in just 45 minutes of play. Reflecting on the team's mentality after the match, he said, "The aim of this game for the entire team was to win, nothing more, nothing less, and I'm happy to help achieve it."
The Broncos didn't let up. Just two minutes later, Marvin Gamez doubled the lead with another header, this one set up by Miguel Gonzalez. Gamez finished with two shots, one on target, and remained a constant threat in the attacking third throughout his 53-minutes of play.
The third and final goal came in the 67th minute, when Sam Lena made the most of his time on the pitch, heading a well-placed cross from Hector Arellanes. Lena recorded two shots on goal in under 50 minutes, capitalizing on the team's control of possession and set-piece opportunities.
While the offense took care of the scoreboard, the defense made sure MSU Denver had no chance to respond. Goalkeeper Jack Chapman was solid in net, recording two saves over 90 minutes for his first clean sheet of the year. Defenders Joseph Spencer and Emiliano Garcia anchored the backline with poise, each playing all 90 minutes and helping limit MSU Denver to just two shots on goal.
