Broncos Down Humboldt 3-0 in Cal Poly Clash Win

ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona volleyball continued their impressive start to conference play on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Cal Poly Humboldt in three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-15) to improve to 4-4 on the season. The Broncos are one of four teams in the conference to make it through CCAA opening weekend without a loss, joining Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State LA, and Stanislaus State with a perfect 2-0 conference record.

The Broncos, who had a tough 2-4 record in non-conference play to open the season, have seemingly found their groove as a team with back-to-back 3-0 sweeps over Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt this weekend. Junior Sarah Ybarra once again led the offense on Saturday, this time recording 14 kills with a lethal season-high .464 hitting percentage on 28 attacks.

Cal Poly Pomona maintained the momentum for most of the match, seeing only five lead changes across the three sets. "We played with more confidence and didn't get comfortable when we had a lead," stated Ybarra when comparing the first six matches to the two wins this weekend.

Renee Nachtigall (14) and Kaden Young (11) each recorded double-digit digs against Humboldt, while setter Kacie Caoili orchestrated the offense with 27 assists. Alexia Athans was a force at the net, leading all players with five blocks, including tying a career-high with three solo. Cal Poly Pomona finished with a .269 team hitting percentage, outpacing Humboldt's .023, while drawing even on both aces (8) and blocks (7).

"It was huge for us to get these wins on the road", continued Ybarra. "We'll continue with this momentum as we play at home next weekend."

Cal Poly Clash
The win was also the first of the 2025-26 Cal Poly Clash, an annual department-wide rivalry between the two CCAA Cal Poly institutions. For volleyball, the team that wins the season head-to-head series earns one point toward the rivalry. This means the Broncos are now in a favorable position to claim the point with a win the next time the two squads meet each other on October 25th in Pomona. More information about the rivalry can be found HERE.
