POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona volleyball picked up their third consecutive sweep to open conference play on Friday night, taking all three sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-18) from Cal State Monterey Bay in their home opener at Kellogg Arena. With the win, the Broncos improve to 5-4 on the season and 3-0 in CCAA play, as they are one of just three teams to have not lost in conference play so far this season. The Otters, on the other hand, fall to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in CCAA play.

Cal Poly Pomona opened set one with energy, jumping to a 5–1 lead behind junior
Sarah Ybarra and a
Renee Nachtigall ace. The Broncos extended the margin to 12–6 as
Charlotte Koerber and
Elle Walker joined the attack. Monterey Bay responded with a 6–2 run, narrowing to 14–12, but CPP surged again, highlighted by an ace from
Hanna Schneider and key kills from
Alexia Athans and
Anastacia Garza. Walker and Ybarra sealed the set, 25–20, with three consecutive kills.

Set two was a battle of momentum swings, with Cal State Monterey Bay surging ahead 14–10 behind blocks and an ace from Malia Thorne. Cal Poly Pomona answered with a 10–1 run fueled by Ybarra, plus points from Koerber, Walker, and Garza to reach 20–15. The Otters clawed back within 23–21, but Ybarra delivered clutch kills down the stretch, including the set-winner, as the Broncos prevailed 25–22.

The Green & Gold rallied after an early deficit in set three, stringing together a 7–0 run to take a 7-3 lead. CPP built steady momentum, with Walker, Garza, and
Kylie Leopard controlling the net. Despite late Otter pushes, the Broncos closed the set at 25–18, sealing their third consecutive sweep.

For Cal Poly Pomona, Ybarra led the attack with 19 kills and also added 17 digs. Close behind, Koerber and Walker each contributed 10 kills, with Koerber posting a double-double by adding 12 digs of her own. On the setting front,
Kacie Caoili contributed 36 assists, her sixth time eclipsing the 30-assist mark in her first seven collegiate matches.

The Broncos will take on San Francisco State in an NCAA West Regional Championship rematch tomorrow, September 27
th, at 5:00 PM in Kellogg Arena. The two CCAA rivals were among the top teams in the country last year, ranking No. 1 and No. 2 in both the CCAA and the West Region for nearly the entire 2024 season.
