SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona opened the 2026 calendar year with a closely contested road battle Friday night, narrowly falling to San Francisco State 74-73. The loss moves the Broncos to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play, snapping a chance to start the new year with a road victory in a game that featured constant momentum swings and came down to the final second.
CPP set the tone early with sharp execution on both ends of the floor. Malcolm Bell ignited the offense with early three-pointers and transition finishes, while Zach Broadous and Jake Goldberg added perimeter scoring to help the Broncos build an early advantage. Cal Poly Pomona played with pace and confidence in the first half, generating quality looks and second-chance opportunities, but San Francisco State stayed within striking distance. A late Gator basket sent CPP into the break trailing just 36-35.
The second half unfolded as a back-and-forth affair. Bell continued to anchor the Broncos offensively, mixing inside finishes with timely shots from deep, while Shyheim Parm, Kevin Simeth, and Asher Schroeder provided key contributions to keep CPP in front during multiple stretches. A strong run midway through the half pushed Pomona to a six-point lead, highlighted by clutch free throws and a momentum-swinging three from Broadous.
The final minute delivered high drama. After San Francisco State edged ahead late, Bell responded by converting at the line and tipping in his own miss with 13 seconds remaining to give the Broncos a one-point lead. The Gators answered at the free-throw line with one second left, sealing the one-point decision.Â
