ARCATA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona came up just short in a tightly contested Cal Poly Clash on Thursday night, dropping an 85-81 overtime decision to Cal Poly Humboldt. The loss moves the Broncos to 9-8 overall and 4-7 in CCAA play after CPP was unable to finish a game it largely dictated through regulation.
The Broncos controlled the early flow, combining efficient shooting with consistent interior scoring to open a sizable first-half lead. Kevin Simeth set the pace inside, converting at a high rate around the rim and fueling an offense that shot better than 63 percent in the opening half. Demarreya Lewis-Cooper and Jake Goldberg complemented the attack from the perimeter as CPP stretched the margin to as many as 22 points and carried a 45-35 lead into the break.
Humboldt adjusted coming out of halftime, turning up its defensive pressure and generating offense in transition. The Lumberjacks steadily worked their way back, knocking down timely threes and attacking the paint. Cal Poly Pomona answered with key baskets from Simeth and Malcolm Bell, but momentum shifted late as Humboldt erased the deficit. A late three-pointer forced overtime, sending the game to an extra period tied at 73-73.
The overtime session remained back-and-forth, with both teams trading baskets and trips to the line. CPP briefly pulled ahead behind finishes from Simeth and Goldberg, but Humboldt converted in the closing moments and capitalized at the free-throw line to secure the win as time expired.
Simeth led all scorers with 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting, adding seven rebounds and three steals. Lewis-Cooper totaled 17 points, while Bell finished with 13 and Goldberg added 11. The Broncos shot 60 percent from the field and scored 54 points in the paint, but late turnovers and missed free throws proved costly in the 85-81 overtime defeat.
