POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball turned a tight contest into a convincing home victory, pulling away in the fourth quarter to defeat Cal State East Bay, 82-67, Thursday evening in Kellogg Arena. With Chico State's loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Broncos have now claimed sole possession of first place in the conference standings with a 12-1 conference record, while also improving to 17-2 overall on the season.
The No. 13 ranked Broncos picked up the win over the Pioneers behind a balanced offensive effort and a dominant performance in the paint. After trailing by one at halftime, Cal Poly Pomona seized control with an 18-14 edge in the third quarter before erupting for 29 points in the final 10 minutes to close the game.
Sydney Nelson led CPP in scoring with 25 points, adding seven rebounds and an assist while consistently attacking the lane.
Andrea Stajic followed with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting, providing key buckets during the decisive second-half run.
Mydrea Moore anchored the interior with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, recording a double-double and helping the Broncos win the rebounding battle, 58-31.
Brielle Minor contributed across the stat sheet with seven points, six assists, and a steal, setting the tempo on both ends of the floor. Off the bench,
Alexis Woodson added six points and nine rebounds, while
Jolleen Olia chipped in nine points, including a timely three-pointer late in the second quarter that helped keep the Broncos within striking distance.
The turning point came midway through the fourth quarter when Cal Poly Pomona used a 14-4 run to stretch a slim advantage into a double-digit lead. The Broncos capitalized on second-chance opportunities and fast-break chances, finishing with a commanding 52-26 edge in points in the paint and 17 second-chance points.
Defensively, the Broncos limited East Bay to 39.7 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers, turning those stops into transition offense down the stretch. The strong closing effort sealed the win and capped another complete performance as Cal Poly Pomona continues to sit atop the CCAA standings.
