Esquival and Campbell Win Pitcher’s Duel on Opening Night

POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona Baseball opened the 2026 season with a 1-0 victory over Azusa Pacific at Scolinos Field on Friday night. Senior pitchers Dylan Esquival and Andrew Campbell stole the show, each striking out five batters and not allowing a run in nine innings of work. With the win, the Broncos have now won 12 of their 15 season openers under head coach Randy Betten.

The Broncos broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Bryan Richman RBI single up the middle that brought home Diego Murillo, who had reached base on a fielder's choice and subsequently swiped second to put himself in scoring position. The lone run would prove to be enough, as the Cougars were unable to plate a run while leaving three runners on base.

Cal Poly Pomona's offense finished with six hits on the night, four of which came from the heart of the order and two off the bat of junior Julian Angulo. Angulo's double in the fifth inning was the only extra base hit of the game, while the Broncos' lineup worked deep counts and drew six walks to keep runners on base. Transfers Daniel Ruiz, Tyler Garcia, and Evan Nahra also contributed knocks in the win, each marking their first career hit at CPP.

Esquival set the tone early on the mound with four innings of shutout baseball, surrendering just three hits and striking out five while not issuing a free base. Campbell followed with five innings of his own, allowing only two hits while striking out five and earning the victory in his season debut. The senior duo combined to limit Azusa Pacific to just five hits in the shutout, setting the tone for the Broncos' winning formula for the rest of this season.
