Gamez Strikes Late Again to Propel Broncos Past Lumberjacks

ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona erased a second-half deficit with two late goals to defeat Cal Poly Humboldt 3-2 Sunday at College Creek Field. The comeback lifted the Broncos to 4-3-4 overall and 2-1-2 in CCAA play.

Hector Arellanes opened the scoring in the 14th minute, collecting the rebound from a blocked shot and finishing his first goal of the season to give CPP a 1-0 advantage. The Broncos carried that lead into halftime after goalkeeper Jack Chapman made four saves during the opening period.

The hosts equalized from the penalty spot in the 48th minute before moving ahead 2-1 with another goal in the 68th minute. CPP continued applying pressure and found its response in the 79th minute. Marvin Gamez connected with Clement Badger, who buried his second goal of the season to level the match at 2-2.

Gamez completed the comeback in the 86th minute, finishing a pass from Jose Garcia for his team-leading seventh goal of the season and the decisive 3-2 advantage. The senior forward powered the attack with a match-high eight shots, four attempts on goal, one goal and one assist. Garcia's helper was his second of the season.

CPP controlled the offensive numbers, out shooting the hosts 20-9, including a 12-4 margin in the second half. The Broncos also earned eight corner kicks while allowing only one. Chapman finished with five saves to secure his fourth victory of the season, while Arellanes and Badger each added important goals as CPP completed the road comeback and earned another three points in conference play.
