Volleyball Sweeps Stanislaus State Behind Athans’ Efficient Attack

TURLOCK, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona volleyball used a balanced offensive attack and a pair of decisive scoring runs to sweep Stanislaus State, 25-21, 25-12, 25-19, Friday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.

The No. 15 ranked Broncos improved to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in CCAA play with their fourth consecutive victory. CPP hit .274 as a team, while limiting the Warriors to a .070 attacking percentage.

Alexia Athans led the Broncos with 11 kills on 12 swings without an error for a career-best .917 hitting percentage. Elle Walker added nine kills while hitting .615, and Sarah Ybarra contributed nine kills and eight digs. Charlotte Koerber finished with eight kills, while freshman Paige Bowyer directed the offense with a season and career-best 30 assists.

Cal Poly Pomona overcame a competitive opening set by turning an 11-10 advantage into a 19-13 lead. The Warriors responded with a late 5-0 run to pull within 23-21, but Koerber answered with a kill, and a Stanislaus State setting error gave the Broncos the opening-set win.

CPP seized control early in the second set. After taking a 2-0 lead, the Broncos scored seven of the next nine points to build a 9-2 advantage. Athans and Walker fueled the attack during a 10-1 run that pushed the lead to 14-3. Cal Poly Pomona maintained its pressure throughout the set, with Keira Limbrick adding two service aces and the Broncos closing on a 25-12 decision.

Stanislaus State opened the third set with four straight points, but the Broncos quickly responded to tie the frame at 4-4. The Warriors later tied the game at 14-14 before CPP answered with three consecutive points, including two Koerber kills. After Stanislaus State pulled within 17-16, Cal Poly Pomona scored eight of the final 11 points. Walker's final kill secured the sweep.
