Baseball Drops Saturday Slugfest, Eyes Sunday Doubleheader

POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona baseball battled through an offense-heavy afternoon at Scolinos Field, falling 18-8 to Colorado State Pueblo in non-conference action on Saturday. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 7-5 on the season while the ThunderWolves improve to 6-4.

The scoring began in the bottom of the first inning when Daniel Ruiz put the Broncos on the board, coming home on a wild pitch to give Cal Poly Pomona a quick lead. That momentum was stalled in the third as CSUP erupted for five runs, capitalizing on three hits and forcing the Broncos to play catch-up the rest of the way.

After going scoreless for the next five straight frames, Cal Poly Pomona scratched across another run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded hit by pitch to narrow the deficit to 6-2. The big swing of the day for the Broncos game in the eighth inning, when Jack Sanders launched a grand slam to left center field, the first home run hit by a Bronco at Scolinos Field this season. It was Sanders' fifth home run of 2026, a mark that leads both CPP and the CCAA.

The Broncos plated their final two runs of the afternoon in the bottom of the ninth on an Austin Duarte infield single and a Justin Yeutter sacrifice fly. However, the team's eight runs wasn't enough to overcome the offensive surge by the ThunderWolves, who plated 18 runs on 13 hits.

On the mound, Matt Lorenzano delivered a season-high 6.0 innings, allowing six runs to score while striking out three on 98 pitches. Zack Bauer, Aaron Ceniceros, and Anthony Jojola made appearances out of the bullpen, combining for the final three innings of the game.
