CARSON, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona continued its late-season push with a 72-66 road victory over conference opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Thursday night. With the win, the Broncos improve to 16-11 overall and 11-10 in CCAA play, positioning themselves in a four-way tie for fourth place entering the final game of the regular season. Seven teams remain in contention for six conference tournament spots, setting up a decisive finish.
Pomona weathered an early push from Dominguez Hills before settling into its rhythm midway through the first half. After trailing 9-8, the Broncos responded with improved defensive activity and timely perimeter shooting. Michael Saba provided a spark, knocking down a three-pointer to give Pomona the lead. Shortly after, Jake Goldberg finished at the rim, while Demarreya Lewis-Cooper created open looks on the perimeter to push the lead further.
The Broncos' defensive pressure began to create separation. Pomona built its lead to as many as 15 before taking a 37-29 advantage into halftime.
Dominguez Hills opened the second half with urgency, cutting the deficit to four after capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and turnovers. The Toros continued to apply pressure, trimming the lead to 45-43 midway through the period. Each time the momentum shifted, Pomona responded with composure.
Goldberg knocked down a three-pointer to halt a run, and Lewis-Cooper followed with another from beyond the arc to push the lead back to eight. Zach Broadous converted a three-point play to stretch the margin to double digits, and Asher Schroeder added a dunk to keep the Broncos in control.
The Toros made one final push in the closing minutes, narrowing the gap to four with under six minutes to play. Kevin Simeth answered with a pair of finishes in the paint, including a dunk off a well-timed pass from Lewis-Cooper. Down the stretch, Saba calmly converted key free throws to secure the victory.
