SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona picked up a 74-69 road win Thursday night over Cal State San Marcos, improving to 12-9 overall and 7-8 in CCAA play. The Broncos relied on balanced scoring, defensive stops, and late-game execution to secure the conference victory.
The opening half featured efficient shooting from CPP, particularly from the perimeter, as the Broncos moved the ball well and found early offensive rhythm. Cal Poly Pomona jumped out in front, but San Marcos answered with timely shooting and second-chance opportunities to shift momentum. Despite shooting efficiently, turnovers and missed defensive rebounds allowed the Cougars to build a lead, and CSUSM carried a 41-35 advantage into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Broncos stayed within reach by attacking the paint and getting to the free-throw line. CPP steadily cut into the deficit, sharpening its defensive pressure and making offensive opportunities harder to come by as the half wore on. A key stretch midway through the second half saw Cal Poly Pomona string together stops and convert on the offensive end, allowing the Broncos to take the lead.
The final minutes were tightly contested, but CPP delivered on both ends of the floor. The Broncos finished at the rim, secured key rebounds, and knocked down free throws down the stretch. Cal Poly Pomona held San Marcos to five points over the final two minutes to close out the 74-69 win.
